People from all walks of life come with different languages, different speaking and writing styles, and different terminology. This can foster creativity and new modes of thinking. However, this can come at a cost: diversity in language can sometimes impede communication and understanding. In the healthcare field, it is important to have a clear precise, and mutually understood language. Recognizing this issue, the World Health Organization developed the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) framework. This framework provides a core set of terminology and procedures for measuring and reporting health and disability. Much work has been done to adapt the ICF framework to hearing, and in particular to the cochlear implant field. In this HEARRING round table, our experts discuss the progress, benefits, and remaining challenges in developing and adopting a set of ICF-compliant terminology and practices for adult cochlear implant users.
